Pigmentation
Your skin cells contain melanocytes, which in turn produce melanin, the substance that determines your skin color. When you have too much melanin in your skin cells, you are said to have hyperpigmented skin. Too little melanin produces hypopigmented skin.
Hypopigmentation and Hyperpigmentation
Hypopigmentation is often caused by inflamation, vitilgo, various fungal infections, and certain medications. Hyperpigmentation on the other hand is caused by an overload of iron in your system, exposure to ultraviolent sun rays, endocrine diseases such as Addison's disease, or pregnancy.

What causes uneven skin pigmentation?
Age spots and sun spots can form on your skin as a result of age or lifestyle factors that increase your body's melanin production and distribution. Melanin is the dark brown pigment of the skin.
Melasma: Dark patches of melasma typically appear as a result of hormone changes from pregnancy or birth control.

Post-inflammatory pigmentation: These marks appear when melanin production increases in response to an injury or wound. The most common exmaple of this is a dark mark left behind from acne.
Freckles: These spots are primarily genetic, though sun exposure can cause them to darken.
