Masseter Botox, or Jaw Botox, is a successful method of treating issues involving the jaw. This might include the reshaping of the face and/or a remedy for teeth grinding or jaw clenching. The treatment is semi-permanent and can last anything from 4 to 9 months.

Exactly how long is dependent on the individual and other associated factors. Read on to discover how long you can expect it to last, depending on why you’re considering having it done.

Why have Masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox is used for two reasons. The first is to reshape the face in those who have a square jaw, changing it to a more aesthetically pleasing oval or heart shape. The second is to treat a medical condition, known as bruxism—or teeth grinding/jaw clenching. We’ll talk more about the latter in a moment.

The treatment targets the masseter muscles of the face. These are strong muscles that are largely responsible for the movement of the jaw. Some people are born with large masseter muscles. Others develop them from overuse, such as regularly chewing gum or the aforementioned teeth grinding and jaw clenching.

How is Masseter Botox done?

In the same way as Botox injections are used to temporarily paralyze facial muscles to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, the same procedure that injects into the masseter muscle will disrupt the signals from the brain. Preventing the muscles from moving means that they will shrink, therefore causing the appearance of the widened jaw to lessen and morph into a more desirable shape.

The treatment is carried out in the doctor’s office, takes around 15 minutes, and you can resume normal activities straight away. The only proviso is that you don’t apply any pressure to the area or rub it for at least 24 hours. Nor should you undergo any strenuous exercise. This is to ensure that you don’t disperse the Botox to any of the surrounding muscles.

After being assessed, the clinician will numb the area with a topical cream. Then 3 or 4 injections will be applied to each side—don’t worry, the needle is extremely fine—meaning you’ll feel little to no discomfort. Once finished, you’ll be free to leave and continue with your planned day.

Teeth grinding treatment

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching is a recognized condition known as bruxism. It can have multiple detrimental side effects, including:

  • Headaches
  • Jaw ache
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Ear pain
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Uneven wearing of the teeth
  • Damage to the teeth, including breakages

Masseter Botox is a known and effective teeth grinding treatment that has significant and long-lasting effects.

How long does Masseter Botox last?

The longevity of Masseter Botox is quite impressive. Whether you undergo it for facial reshaping or teeth grinding treatment, it’s important to remember that the results aren’t instant. It takes at least a few days for the muscles to begin to contract, change shape, and—in the case of teeth grinding—stop the involuntary movements.

Some people do report improvements in looks/symptoms after 2-3 days. More usually, you’ll see a difference after about a week to 10 days. This will continue to improve over the next 3 months. Typically, the peak effect happens at about the 12-week mark.

On average, re-treatment is carried out at anything from 4-6 months. However, and especially in the case of teeth grinding treatment, the more times you have Masseter Botox, the longer it lasts. Results in such cases can last up to 9 months, depending on the individual.
