The “RF” in RF microneedling stands for radio frequency. It’s one of the latest treatments available to improve the appearance of many skin conditions and slow the aging process. You might also hear it referred to as collagen induction therapy.

The process combines two treatments in one: microneedling and radio frequency therapy. The FDA has approved the process as a medical procedure for a variety of uses. They recommend that it’s only carried out by a medical practitioner who’s undergone special training in the process.

The benefits of RF microneedling are many and we discuss these below.

Everything you Need to Know about RF Microneedling

What it is

RF microneedling uses a machine that creates tiny holes in the skin. This triggers the deeper layers of the skin to create additional collagen and elastin—the two proteins that give the skin firmness, lift, and a youthful appearance.

Combining radiofrequency with this, the healing process is magnified as it happens deep within the dermal layer of the skin—the area where new skin cell growth occurs. It causes the underlying building blocks of the tissue to heat up. This has a dramatic effect on increasing collagen production and tightening the skin.

The benefits of RF microneedling

FR microneedling brings many benefits over traditional treatment and other laser procedures. These include:

  • Significantly less post-treatment discomfort and downtime: Reduced redness, swelling, and irritation. This means you can quickly get back to day-to-day activities with no worry that you might not be looking your best.
  • It’s suitable for most skin types: All colors, tones, and types of skin can successfully be treated.
  • Faster and more dramatic results: The combination therapy works a lot quicker than regular microneedling. Rather than having to wait 3-6 months to see an improvement, RF microneedling can bring results in a matter of weeks.
  • Works for various aesthetic skin conditions: Including fading of scars, stretch marks, acne marks, wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation issues, cellulite, and more.

Microneedling: RF Microneedling—the difference

  • Microneedling vs. microneedling RF

Microneedling vs. microneedling RF

The difference between the two treatments is the addition of radio frequency into the mix. This penetrates deeply, causing the lower structure of the skin to tighten and constrict. This is in addition to the stimulation of collagen and elastin.

A further treatment that’s sometimes combined with RF microneedling is to apply a platelet-rich plasma treatment. This involves the doctor drawing some blood from your arm and, using a special machine, extracting the plasma from it. This is then applied to the area that’s been treated to maximize the results.

In the same way as regular microneedling, the RF version can also be utilized off-label to provide treatment for excessive sweating. The medical name for this is hyperhidrosis. It works by reducing the size and number of sweat glands and can provide permanent relief from the problem. Speak to your RF microneedling dermatologist to determine if you might be a candidate.
