RHA fillers, or—to give them their technical name, Resilient Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers—are the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that can reliably and naturally turn back the clock on the aging process.

There are three different types of RHA fillers, each of which is used to treat certain types of wrinkles.

The different types of RHA fillers

In the hands of an experienced practitioner, RHA fillers can have a dramatically positive effect on how you look. Your dermatologist has a selection of options, each designed to target certain wrinkle types.

These RHA fillers are classified and utilized as follows:

  • RHA 2: Used for mild wrinkles. Especially useful for small signs of aging that occur around the lips. However, they can also be used on other fine lines anywhere on the face.
  • RHA 3: This effectively targets deeper lines and wrinkles. Your dermatologist might use this on the corners of the lips and around the jowls. It’s especially good for smoothing nasolabial lines (the ones that run from the edge of the nose down to and below the lips).
  • RHA 4: Used for deeper wrinkles on the jowls and cheeks, as well as adding volume and contours to the jawline, and reducing facial folds.

How are RHA fillers used?

Your dermatologist will assess your face, skin condition, and signs of aging. They’ll discuss with you what you’d like to achieve and explain how fillers can enhance your looks.

Treatment is usually carried out straight away and, depending on the area/s to be injected, takes anything up to 30 minutes. Depending on the results, you might require a further touch-up a couple of weeks afterward. A numbing cream will be applied to the skin and the fillers also contain lidocaine, so you won’t feel any pain—for most people, the only thing they feel is a mild pinch as the fillers are injected.

Once in situ, the fillers immediately create volume within the tissues. This means that the results are noticeable straight away. The hyaluronic acid they contain is almost identical to what your body produces—this is why the results look so natural and don’t cause any stiffness or frozen expressions.

You might have a little swelling and redness post-treatment, or even some mild bruising. However, this disappears quickly over the next few days. As it does, you’ll continue to see further improvements in wrinkle reduction and facial plumpness.

Am I a good candidate for RHA fillers?

RHA fillers are suitable for almost everyone. If you have lines and wrinkles that you’d like diminished, then you’ll likely be a good candidate.

The list of contraindications is very small, with the major ones being:

  • A known allergy or hypersensitivity to the ingredients in the filler.
  • A known allergy or hypersensitivity to lidocaine.
  • Having an active infection close to the injection site.

While it used to be that those with certain autoimmune conditions (such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis, etc.) or any type of immunosuppression were told they weren’t suitable candidates, further research has not established any relationship between these diseases and the use of RHA fillers (information as of 2023 from the US Government National Library of Medicine). Therefore, this is not a contraindication to their use.

However, it’s still important to mention any such conditions to your dermatologist prior to treatment so they can assess and apply the very latest recommendations.
