Beard Ruff 101
What is beard ruff?

What is beard ruff?
Beard ruff is inflamed skin that becomes dry, causing flakes of dry skin that accumulate within the hairs of your beard. It can be caused by different reasons, including:
- A fungal infection that occurs from the yeast that naturally lives on the skin. The yeast on hairless skin is disturbed by everyday habits, such as washing, touching the face, or sun exposure. When you cover this with hair—AKA, a beard—this acts as a barrier and allows the yeast to multiply. The result is itchy and flaky skin.
- The use of harsh shampoo and/or facial wash can cause the skin to become dry. This naturally causes the skin to flake and, once again, these get caught in the beard hair and cause itching.
- Colder months can also cause the skin to dry out, as can spending a lot of time in air-conditioned environments.
How do I know if I’ve got beard ruff?
Beard ruff accumulates beneath the beard, with itchy and flaky skin being the biggest clue that you’re suffering. It causes the skin to become inflamed, and the natural reaction to that is to scratch it. If it gets worse, you may see dandruff-like flakes appearing within the beard.
Beard ruff is the number 1 reason that many people give up on their beard growing journey.
The 3 Steps to Getting Rid of Beard Ruff
- Step 1: use beard shampoo
- Step 2: use high-quality beard oil
- Step 3: invest in a quality boar’s hair beard brush
Step 1: use beard shampoo
If you only take one thing away from this article, it’s that you shouldn’t use regular shampoo or washes on your beard. This includes anti-dandruff brands. Not only are many of these filled with harsh chemicals, but the ones for the hair on your head are designed to remove grease and oil. This is not something you want to do with a beard. Instead, purchase a high-quality, dedicated shampoo that’s designed for beards and is free from parabens and sulfates.
Only wash your beard once or twice a week—any more than that can cause the skin to dry out too much.
Another top tip is not to rub your beard with a towel to dry it. Towel fibers are rough and cause the hairs to become frizzy. Instead, use a dedicated microfiber cloth to gently pat away moisture.
Step 2: use high-quality beard oil
Beard oil (or balm) is a must-have product. But beware, because not all are made equal. You need an all-natural product that contains a large proportion of oils. Good oils include:
- Grapeseed oil
- Castor oil
- Coconut oil
- Almond oil
- Avocado oil
- Hemp seed oil
Beard balm should contain at least one of these oils, as well as cocoa or shea butter. Beeswax is also a good quality ingredient. Use beard oil or balm daily to help combat beard ruff.
Step 3: invest in a quality boar’s hair beard brush
Purchase a good quality boar’s hair beard brush and use it every day as part of your beard regime. Not only does it train the hairs to grow in the right direction, but boar’s hair traps oils and evenly distributes them throughout the beard.
